As the oil and gas industry continues to seek more efficient and environmentally responsible waste management solutions, tank bottom oily sludge treatment has become an increasingly important challenge. Tank bottom sludge typically contains a complex mixture of oil, water, sand, rust, and fine solids that accumulate during crude oil storage and transportation. Efficient separation and recovery of valuable hydrocarbons from this waste stream can significantly reduce disposal costs while improving sustainability.

Recently, GN Separation successfully delivered a 22-inch Decanter Centrifuge to an African customer for tank bottom oily sludge treatment applications. The project highlights GN’s growing presence in the Middle East and African markets, where demand for advanced separation technologies continues to increase.
The 22-inch decanter centrifuge is designed to perform continuous solid-liquid separation under demanding operating conditions. During the treatment process, oily sludge is fed into the centrifuge bowl rotating at high speed. The centrifugal force generated inside the bowl separates solids, water, and oil according to their density differences. Heavier solids are transported by the screw conveyor toward the solids discharge port, while the liquid phases are discharged separately for further processing or recovery.

One of the major advantages of using a decanter centrifuge for oily sludge treatment is the ability to recover valuable oil that would otherwise be disposed of with the waste solids. This not only reduces environmental impact but also improves the overall economics of refinery and storage terminal operations.
GN’s 22-inch decanter centrifuge features wear-resistant protection in critical areas exposed to abrasive solids, ensuring long service life and reliable performance even when processing high-sand-content sludge. The equipment is equipped with a variable frequency drive system, allowing operators to optimize bowl speed, differential speed, and pond depth according to changing feed conditions.
The robust design of the centrifuge also minimizes maintenance requirements and supports continuous operation in remote locations where equipment reliability is essential. For customers operating in harsh climates and challenging environments, these advantages can significantly reduce operational downtime and maintenance costs.
With extensive experience in oil sludge treatment, environmental remediation, and industrial waste processing, GN continues to provide customized separation solutions to customers worldwide. The successful deployment of this 22-inch centrifuge in Africa further demonstrates GN’s commitment to delivering efficient, reliable, and value-driven separation equipment to the global market.
GN currently offers a complete range of decanter centrifuges from 9-inch to 30-inch bowl diameters for applications including oily sludge treatment, wastewater treatment, mining, food processing, chemical production, and drilling waste management.
As environmental regulations become increasingly stringent across the globe, advanced separation technologies such as GN decanter centrifuges will continue to play a vital role in helping operators achieve both economic and environmental objectives.
