2 Sets of GNMS-1000GPM Trailer Mounted Mud Recycling Systems for a Middle East HDD Company

High-Capacity Drilling Fluid Recycling Solutions for Trenchless Construction

GN Solids Control has supplied two GNMS-1000GPM trailer-mounted mud recycling systems to a horizontal directional drilling (HDD) contractor in the Middle East. Each system is designed for a processing capacity of 1,000 gallons per minute (GPM), providing an integrated solution for drilling fluid cleaning, mixing, and storage in demanding trenchless construction applications.

As infrastructure development continues to expand across the Middle East, horizontal directional drilling has become an important construction method for installing pipelines, underground utilities, and communication cables while minimizing surface disruption. These projects require reliable drilling fluid management to maintain borehole stability, transport drilling cuttings, and support continuous drilling operations.

The supplied GN systems are designed to address these operational requirements through a combination of mechanical solids separation equipment and integrated mud handling components.

Why Mud Recycling Is Essential for HDD Operations

During horizontal directional drilling, drilling fluid, commonly known as drilling mud, performs several important functions. It helps cool and lubricate the drilling tools, transports excavated soil and rock cuttings toward the surface, and contributes to borehole stability.

However, as drilling progresses, the fluid accumulates suspended solids. If these particles are not removed effectively, they can negatively affect mud properties, increase equipment wear, and reduce drilling efficiency.

A properly configured HDD mud recycling system separates unwanted solids from the drilling fluid, allowing a significant portion of the treated mud to be reused.

This approach can reduce the consumption of fresh water and drilling additives, minimize waste generation, and help contractors control overall drilling fluid costs.

GNMS-1000GPM System Configuration

Each GNMS-1000GPM system incorporates multiple stages of solids separation to process drilling fluid efficiently.

The main equipment configuration includes:

  1. GNZS Series Shale Shakers

Each system is equipped with two GNZS series shale shakers, which perform the primary separation stage. Their vibrating motion forces drilling fluid through specialized screens while retaining larger drilling cuttings.

The large screening area and adjustable screen basket angle provide operational flexibility when handling different drilling conditions and particle characteristics.

  1. Integrated Mud Cleaner

Following primary screening, the drilling fluid passes through an integrated mud cleaner equipped with desander and desilter hydrocyclones, together with an underflow shale shaker.

The desander cyclones target larger sand particles, while the desilter cyclones remove finer suspended solids. The underflow shaker separates the discharged solids from the liquid stream, helping recover additional drilling fluid.

This combination provides secondary and tertiary solids separation within a compact equipment arrangement.

  1. Mud Storage Tanks

The supplied package includes two storage tanks to provide additional capacity for handling and storing processed drilling fluid.

Proper storage capacity helps maintain a consistent supply of treated mud for drilling operations and supports continuous fluid circulation.

  1. Mud Mixing Tanks

Three mixing tanks are also included in the overall project supply. These tanks are designed to facilitate drilling fluid preparation and conditioning.

Equipped with mixing hoppers and mud agitators, they allow operators to incorporate bentonite, polymers, and other drilling fluid additives according to the requirements of the geological formation.

Advantages of Trailer-Mounted Mud Recycling Systems

Mobility is an important consideration for HDD contractors because drilling projects frequently involve multiple locations and changing site conditions.

A trailer-mounted mud recycling system offers practical advantages in transportation, mobilization, and equipment installation.

By integrating the main treatment equipment into a transportable configuration, contractors can simplify equipment relocation between job sites and reduce the need for extensive on-site assembly.

GN designs its mud recycling systems with attention to equipment integration, accessibility, and practical operation. Depending on project requirements, configurations can be adapted to different capacities and installation arrangements.

Supporting More Efficient Trenchless Construction

The supply of two GNMS-1000GPM systems represents another application of GN’s solids control technology in the international HDD market.

With two high-capacity treatment systems, the contractor receives equipment designed to support demanding drilling fluid circulation and recycling requirements. The combination of shale shakers, mud cleaners, storage tanks, and mixing equipment provides an integrated approach to drilling fluid management.

Effective mud recycling is not simply about removing solids. It also involves maintaining suitable fluid properties, managing drilling waste, and ensuring that the treated fluid can be returned to the drilling operation when appropriate.

GN Solids Control continues to develop customized mud recycling and solids control solutions for HDD, CBM, tunneling, and other industrial drilling applications.

Through equipment integration and application-oriented engineering, GN aims to help drilling contractors improve fluid management, reduce operational costs, and maintain reliable performance across different project environments.
