GN Solids Control recently completed a customized delivery of solids vacuum pumps for an Africa-based oilfield service company, demonstrating GN’s strong capability to provide application-specific solutions for global clients operating in harsh environments.

The client faced a recurring challenge: how to efficiently transfer drilling waste and oil sludge across long distances in remote oilfields where power supply is limited or hazardous conditions prevail. After technical discussions and a comprehensive analysis of the project environment, GN proposed its air-operated GNSP series vacuum pumps as the ideal solution.

Unlike traditional mechanical or electrical pumps, GN’s solids vacuum pumps are fully pneumatic, requiring only an air source to operate. This makes them ATEX safe, explosion-proof by design, and perfect for Zone 1 and Zone 2 hazardous areas. The pumps are capable of moving viscous, abrasive, or sludge-like materials with up to 80% solids content — a key requirement for the customer’s needs.

The delivery included multiple units of GNSP-20B and GNSP-40B, each engineered with:

GN Solids Control has once again proven its strong capabilities in integrated project delivery by completing a full solids control system package for a 2000HP drilling rig, tailored for a long-term partner in the Indian oilfield services sector. This marks another milestone in GN’s expanding presence across South Asia and reflects the growing trust in GN’s engineering and manufacturing strength.

This system was designed to ensure maximum efficiency and reliability for challenging onshore drilling conditions. From fluid recovery to solids separation and mixing, the package is a complete solution. It features a GNZYQ1200A liquid-gas separator that protects the system from hazardous gas influxes, ensuring a safe and steady start to the fluid circulation process.

To handle primary solids separation, three high-G shale shakers (GNZS594K) were deployed, providing consistent performance with adjustable vibration and a large screen area for better cuttings removal. Following the shakers, a GNZCQ360 vacuum degasser removes trapped gases in the mud to stabilize density and improve downstream equipment performance.

A major highlight of the package is the GNZJ594K-2S12N mud cleaner, which combines desander and desilter cyclones over a single shaker deck to achieve fine solids removal. This multifunctional equipment reduces system footprint while improving separation efficiency, an ideal solution for high-end drilling operations.

Supporting this process are nine centrifugal pumps, selected for their interchangeability with Mission models and strong track record in durability. These pumps transfer fluids between equipment while maintaining high flow rates. The system includes ten mud tanks for various stages of the drilling process, designed and fabricated in-house by GN.

To maintain uniform mud properties and prevent solids settling, nineteen mud agitators and seventeen mud guns were installed throughout the tank system. Additionally, two jet mixing hoppers help operators quickly prepare or condition drilling fluids, providing greater flexibility and operational control.

All equipment is powered and monitored via a centralized electrical control system, ensuring safe and efficient operation across the entire rig-up.
